SMPS Foundation Accelerates Research Activities, Thanks Donors

Acting on strategic planning recommendations of its Board of Trustees, the SMPS Foundation has significantly expanded its research and publication efforts during the past year. Focusing on trends and changing A/E/C business conditions, the Foundation’s current work is designed to help marketers and their firms anticipate and prepare for new developments in how firms will operate in the next 10–15 years.

As a first step, the Foundation conducted an extensive open-ended survey of the SMPS Fellows to identify the changes that can reasonably be expected in our industry. That survey, soon to be released for distribution, produced a wealth of ideas and predictions about what is in store for all of us.

Four trends most frequently mentioned by the Fellows were then selected as topics for additional research and white papers, which are scheduled to be presented at Build Business on August 23, 2007 (Session 201 from 10:30 am–noon). Additional white papers are being prepared to explore Building Information Modeling (BIM), Workforce Shrinkage, Firm Knowledge Management and Transfer to New Generations, and Assessing Client Needs and Expectations. If these are well-received, research into several more topics from the survey will follow.

The Foundation’s goal is to keep marketers and business development professionals at the leading edge of innovative practices and changing business conditions. It will identify emerging trends, conduct research to measure the effectiveness of new methods, and disseminate conclusions and recommendations to marketers and their firms. The topics explored will be both relevant and functional, to produce results that can be applied by marketers and their firms to real-world situations most members will confront.

Thanks to the generous and voluntary contributions of SMPS members and their firms through the new Invest 2 Thrive campaign, the Foundation has been able to solicit the support needed for this expanded body of work. Many members and firms have responded to date, but much more support is needed to continue the research and reporting begun this year. Contributions to the SMPS Foundation are fully tax deductible. To learn more, and to join the growing list of supporters, please visit www.smpsfoundation.org.

The SMPS Foundation wishes to express sincere appreciation to the following members and firms who are generously supporting new research and educational programs. Contributors as of May 31, 2007, include:
