“Those Amazing Engineers” Helps Companies Help Kids
Charlotte Forbes, Principal, Trilogy Publications LLC
What does a kids’ book called "Those Amazing Engineers" have to do with your company?
The book gives companies in the A/E/C industry a chance to join the national effort to generate interest in engineering and establish the field as a compelling career option—and just maybe get more young students thinking, "I want to be an engineer when I grow up."
Produced by Trilogy Publications LLC, a team of writers, designers, and communications experts who have served the industry for more than 25 years, Those Amazing Engineers is a 32-page, soft cover, illustrated book that’s colorful and fun and shows from a kid’s perspective that, from spacecraft to supercomputers, bridges to tunnels, roller coasters to baseball bats, engineering is everywhere.
Some of the industry’s leading firms and associations as well as universities and schools have purchased more than 30,000 copies of the book since its debut in January 2004.
"Copies of Those Amazing Engineers were distributed to over 100 of our operating companies around the world. Our business leaders have not only used them to educate children in the school system through science fairs, classroom discussions, and mentoring projects, but in many other community spirited ways," says Judith A. Guard, Manager, Corporate Affairs and Conferences at EMCOR Group, Inc. "Having these guides clearly and simply spell out the different engineering disciplines is a real boon for the industry and the next level of construction employees."
Ideal for National Engineers Week With National Engineers Week (EWeek) 2005 fast approaching in February, and Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day in Spring 2005, many industry firms are looking for ways to reach out to the younger generation.
"It’s critical to get something like this book into the classroom to excite young people about the impact engineers have on everyday life," says Frank Lombardi, chief engineer of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, one of the charter sponsors of the book. "It would be a wonderful way to celebrate National Engineers Week next February when the focus will be on the profession."
Hannah O'Grady, Deputy Executive Director, American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York), a charter sponsor and repeat purchaser of the book, adds, "Those Amazing Engineers opens up the world of engineering to our youth and makes accessible to them a profession of great importance and creativity by illustrating how it affects every aspect of our lives. As an advocate for the profession, we commend this effort and believe it will influence a new generation of engineers."
A Good PR Move Beyond EWeek, purchasers of the book have donated copies to science fairs and career days, government agencies, elected officials, foundations, museums, and local and national media.
"We’ve had companies purchase thousands of copies for distribution locally, nationally, and internationally. That translates to thousands of times the organization has been associated in the public eye with a critical cause," says Rose Reichman, a partner in Trilogy Publications and principal in Reichman Frankle Inc. "It’s a true win-win situation."
